Cookie Policy
Last Updated: January 1, 2025
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, how Jaxomo uses them on the Site, and what choices you have regarding cookies. We want to keep this clear and simple, so you can easily understand our use of cookies (no technical jargon overload!).
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device (computer, smartphone, tablet) when you visit a website. They serve a variety of purposes, like keeping you logged in, remembering site preferences, or tracking site usage. Cookies can be “first-party” (set by the site you’re visiting, like Jaxomo) or “third-party” (set by other services that run on the site, like analytics or advertising partners).
In short, cookies help websites work efficiently and provide information to the site owners. Cookies do not give us access to your computer or any personal information beyond what you choose to share – they are limited to the data they contain (often an ID or value).
How We Use Cookies on Jaxomo
We use cookies on Jaxomo for a few key reasons:
-
Essential Cookies: These are necessary for the basic functioning of our website. For example, if we have a banner or pop-up (like a cookie consent notice or a promo), a cookie might remember that you’ve closed it so it doesn’t keep popping up on every page. If our site has any login or membership features in the future, essential cookies would manage your session. Without these, certain features may not work properly.
-
Preference Cookies: These cookies remember your choices and preferences to provide a more personalized experience. For instance, if the site has a dark mode or text size option and you set it, a cookie could remember that preference. Currently, Jaxomo has fairly standard settings, but as an example, if we ever implement language options or other custom settings, cookies would help store those selections.
-
Analytics Cookies: We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use Jaxomo (as described in the Privacy Policy). Google Analytics sets cookies to collect information like how many people visit, which pages are viewed, how long visitors stay, and how they found our site (e.g., via Google search, Pinterest, etc.). This data is aggregated and helps us improve the website’s content and layout. For example, if analytics show a lot of people enjoy a “Winter Outfits” post and spend a long time on it, we might create more content like that. These cookies might have names like
_ga
,_gid
, etc., and they typically contain anonymous IDs. We have configured Google Analytics with IP anonymization, meaning it truncates your IP address so it’s not fully recorded. -
Affiliate Cookies: Jaxomo participates in affiliate marketing programs (such as Amazon Associates, RewardStyle, or others – we’ll update this list as needed). If you click on an affiliate link on our site (for example, a link to a product I recommend), a cookie may be placed by the affiliate partner to track that you came from Jaxomo. This cookie helps attribute any purchase you make back to our site, so we can earn a small commission. Importantly, these cookies do not store personal information like your name or address – they usually contain just an anonymous identifier and details about what link was clicked. For instance, Amazon’s cookie will have an affiliate tag indicating our site as the referrer. Affiliate cookies generally last for a short period (a number of days set by the merchant) and only matter if you make a purchase during that window.
-
Social Media and Third-Party Cookies: Currently, we don’t have extensive third-party widgets on Jaxomo, but if we embed content or use third-party services, they might set cookies too. For example, if we embed a YouTube video, YouTube/Google might set cookies to track video views. Or if we have a Pinterest “Pin It” button on images, Pinterest might use a cookie so that it remembers you’re logged in to Pinterest when pinning. We try to minimize heavy third-party scripts, but some features like sharing buttons or embedded Instagram feeds could involve cookies from those platforms. We recommend checking those services’ cookie policies for specifics (e.g., Pinterest or Instagram’s own policies).
What Types of Cookies Do We Use?
To summarize, here are the types of cookies you might encounter on Jaxomo:
-
Session Cookies: These are temporary cookies that last only for the duration of your browsing session on our site. They are deleted when you close your browser. Session cookies might be used for things like remembering you as you navigate from page to page (so, for instance, items remain in a hypothetical shopping cart or a multi-page form retains your inputs).
-
Persistent Cookies: These cookies remain on your device for a set period even after you close the browser. They have an expiration date. Persistent cookies are used for remembering preferences or analytics over time. For example, a persistent cookie might remember that you visited us before, so we can see returning visitor stats. Affiliate cookies are also usually persistent for a short period (like 24 hours to a few days, depending on the program).
-
First-Party Cookies: Set by Jaxomo (our domain). These include things like our own preference or session cookies.
-
Third-Party Cookies: Set by external services we use (Google Analytics, affiliate networks, etc.). These cookies are controlled by those third-parties, but we use them for the purposes described. We ensure any third-party we involve is reputable and respects privacy standards.
Examples of specific cookies (for transparency):
-
cookieConsent
– a hypothetical first-party cookie we might use to remember your cookie consent choice (value: “yes” once you accept, duration: 6 months or 1 year, so we don’t bother you repeatedly). -
_ga
– a Google Analytics cookie (third-party) used to distinguish users with a random ID, duration: 14 months (per our settings). -
associate-tag
– an example affiliate cookie name (could vary by program). For Amazon, their cookie might include our affiliate ID “jaxomo-20” within it if you click an Amazon link. -
Pinterest_pinit_cookie
– if we had a Pinterest widget, they might set something like this to enable pinning, etc.
(Note: The above are illustrative; actual cookie names and values may differ.)
Your Choices: Managing & Disabling Cookies
You have the right to choose whether or not to accept cookies. Here are some ways to manage them:
-
Browser Settings: Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings preferences. You can usually find options to:
-
Clear existing cookies (deleting cookies will log you out of sites and reset preferences).
-
Block all cookies (note: this may break some site functionality).
-
Block third-party cookies (this stops cookies from parties other than the site domain).
-
Receive a notification when a cookie is set.
Check your browser’s help documentation for specific instructions. For example, in Chrome you can go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and site data; in Safari, Preferences > Privacy; in Firefox, Options > Privacy & Security, etc.
-
-
Cookie Banner (if applicable): On your first visit to Jaxomo, you may have seen a cookie notice. By continuing to use the site or clicking “Accept,” you gave consent to cookie use. If you did not accept and chose to navigate away, then we respect that choice. If we implement a “Reject” option, we will endeavor to not set non-essential cookies for you. (Currently, the primary non-essential cookies are analytics and affiliate cookies; if you want to avoid those completely, you can use the other methods described here.)
-
Google Analytics Opt-Out: Google provides a browser add-on if you want to opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all websites. You can download it here: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. This add-on prevents Google Analytics JavaScript from sharing info about your visits.
-
Do Not Track: As mentioned in our Privacy Policy, some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. While we currently don’t respond differently to DNT, having it enabled usually signals to third-party scripts (like analytics) your preference. Google Analytics doesn’t specifically honor DNT by default, but our limited data collection and your ability to opt out using the add-on are available. Other third-parties might respect it – it varies.
-
Opt-Out of Affiliate Tracking: There isn’t a universal opt-out for affiliate cookies like there is for advertising cookies. However, since affiliate cookies only activate when you click those links, you can avoid them by not clicking or by clearing cookies after clicking. If you don’t want any affiliate cookies, you might also consider using a browser’s private/incognito mode when clicking product links, as those modes typically isolate or erase cookies after the session.
Keep in mind that disabling cookies might affect your experience. For example, if you block all cookies, some websites (not just ours) might not function smoothly – you might have to re-enter preferences or login details repeatedly, etc. On Jaxomo, blocking cookies shouldn’t significantly hinder reading blog posts, but it could prevent certain features (like interactive elements or remembering that you’ve read an announcement already).
Changes to This Cookie Policy
We may update our Cookie Policy occasionally (for instance, if we start using new types of cookies or new analytics tools). We will update the “Last Updated” date at the top when we do. Significant changes may be communicated via a notice on our site. We encourage you to review this Cookie Policy from time to time to stay informed about our cookie practices.
